Take the 6 Step Tour

How'd Keokee, Va., get its name? We're no authority on that. Our research says it was likely named after the wife of a local coal mining magnate, circa 1800s, and that Keokee is a Cherokee word used for a woman's name without, apparently, other meaning. This has not been confirmed by a native Cherokee speaker. Keokee is still a neat given name and even a surname in use by women (and some men) in the U.S. and Latin America.   ««|»»
